President Akufo-Addo’s Convoy in Fatal Accident: One Fatality, Several Injured

One person is reported dead and several others seriously injured following a tragic accident on the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

The incident involved multiple vehicles from President Akufo-Addo’s convoy, which was returning from Kumasi after a series of official engagements with the President.

Tragically, the event led to the loss of Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the drivers. Several officers providing close protection and police personnel from the President’s security detail also sustained injuries. According to reports, the injured officers received treatment at Suhum Hospital. They are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further care.

The collision led to significant vehicle damage within the convoy. Fortunately, President Akufo-Addo remained unharmed, having traveled to Accra by military aircraft.

Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Office of the President, stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers.” He added that more information would be shared as they continue to evaluate the situation.

The convoy encountered a collision with a KIA Rhino truck, causing the crash. Footage circulating on social media reveals the severely damaged Toyota on the roadside, with security personnel nearby.
