President John Dramani Mahama has parted the country’s security services on the back for what he said is their prompt response to Thursday’s flooding situation in some parts of Accra.
Nearly nine five of downpour caused flooding in many parts of the capital city which has become an annual occurrence for some years now.
Many homes and other properties were submerged by the intermittent rains which started around 2:00AM Thursday and left scores of residents homeless and others stranded at Odawna, Adabraka, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie, Mallam, Kwashiebu, Mataheko, Alajo, and Glefe among other areas.
The situation forced residents in those areas to move to higher grounds to wait for rescue teams to get to them.
Rescue mission
A team of security officers including the Ghana Police Service, the Military, and National Disaster Management Operations (NADMO) moved in to the affected areas to rescue people who were stranded and or had their homes submerged.
At the Odawna-Saraha, the Daily Graphic reported that some residents who were thought to be in danger refused to be rescued by boats to safety. They residents were reportedly more interested in safeguarding their properties.
Good job
In a tweet early Friday, President Mahama commended the swift response by the rescue team, saying ” Compliments again to our security services for the prompt response to the emergency created by yesterday’s heavy downpour”.
Thursday’s downpour is the first worst episode after the June 3 disaster in Accra that left more than 150 people dead and properties running into billions of cedis destroyed.
