Players of the senior national team, the Black Stars have started arriving in the country after buying their own tickets. The Sports Ministry has categorically indicated that it will not pay for the airfares of the foreign based players who have been called to play in Ghana’s last qualifying game against Rwanda.
The likes of John Boye and Jonathan Mensah who ply their trade in Turkey, Duncan, Agyeman Badu, Afriyie Acquah, Yaw Yeboah, Frank Acheampong from Holland are also in the country for the game.
Meanwhile Kotoko striker Dauda Mohammed has been called to replace Ebenezer Assifua who has been ruled out due to injury.
Training with Coach Avram Grant begins today August 30.
There has been a raging feud between the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry over financing and other policy decisions bothering on the success of Ghana’s sports.
According to the ministry there isn’t enough money to pay for travel, accommodation and per-diem of the foreign based players. It therefore suggested that the coach use the local based players to also give them a chance to justify why they should be included in the senior side.
Sports Minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye also indicated that the outcome of the final game does not have any bearing on Ghana’s qualification hence his suggestion that the local players be tried.
But the Ghana Football Association (GFA) thinks otherwise and has indicated that the current brouhaha has the potential of affecting the team in future, an assertion the minister has refuted.
