The Executive Secretary of the United Nations framework convention on climate change, Patricia Espinosa has underscored the need for countries to increase capacity to fight global warming.
She was addressing delegates at a consultation meeting at Skhirate in Morocco in preparation for the United Conference on climate change in November this year.
Over 140 delegates and climate negotiators from more than 50 countries gathered in the two-day session to discuss various issues to best prepare for the conference of parties, COP-22 from November 7 to 18 in Marrakech, Morocco.
Discussions centered on key issues such as expected outcomes for the COP-22 conference, the Pre-2020 agenda includes developing one hundred billion U.S. dollars per year climate finance roadmap and the status of ratifications and possible early entry into force of the Paris agreement.
The Executive Secretary of the United Nations framework convention on climate change, Patricia Espinosa noted success in Marrakech would mean implementing the historic Paris agreement to transition towards a low-carbon economy.
“Marrakech is our opportunity to highlight the inseparability of these two land mark agreements, the Paris agreement and the 2030 development agenda. Marrakech is also the opportunity to demonstrate to the rest of the world that the Paris agreement in place, governments are committed to come together to turn the vision elaborated in Paris into reality” she said.
The two days of plenaries and workshops allowed participants to deliberate on climate finance, capacity building, nationally determined contributions under the Paris agreement, the global action agenda, Warsaw mechanism on loss and damage and the 2018 facilitative dialogue and global stock-take.
