The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has given all aspirants up till midday on Monday to submit banker’s draft of payment of filing fees to be accepted as candidates for the December 7 elections.

Parties were asked to return banker’s draft of payments during the two-day filing period after the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Independent People’s Party (IPP) secured a court writ against the Commission.

But an Accra High Court on Friday, October 7 dismissed PPP’s application for injunction over the filing fees – GH¢50, 000 for presidential nominees and GH¢10,000 for parliamentary nominees.

Hours after the court’s decision, the Commission wants payments to be made by the given deadline “for qualification to be accepted as a candidate for the 2016 elections”.

Presidential candidates are expected to submit the banker’s draft at the head office of the Commission directly to the chair of the Commission, Charlotte Osei.

Parliamentary candidates, on the other hand, are to submit at the district offices to the district directors.

“Political parties may alternatively pay for their parliamentary nominees at the head office of the Commission; but the banker’s draft for such nominees must be accompanied by a list of the party’s candidates on the party’s letterhead and properly signed by authorised party executives”.
