Workers of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) have resumed full operations after about seven hours of grounding domestic flights across the country Saturday.
The workers’ action was prompted by encroachment on the GCAA’s air traffic lands at La Nkwantanan near Madina in the Greater Accra Region.
They claimed access to the land to install a 600,000-euro air traffic equipment is being impeded by armed land guards who have invaded the land.
They thus gave the government up to July 8 to get their lands back failure of which they would cease operations for all domestic flights the next day.
On Saturday, the workers carried through their threat as they ceased operations for all domestic flights across the country, leaving passengers stranded particularly in Accra and Kumasi.
Some stranded passengers at the Kumasi Airport had to resort to traveling by road only after finding out that domestic flights have been cancellation.
Similar incidents were reported from other parts of the country. Tamale Airport and Sunyani Airport all had livid passengers who were disappointed at the last minute news of the cancellation.
Full operations were resumed at exactly 11:45, following an intervention by the Chief of Staff, who has granted them an audience on their grievances.
Chairperson of the GCAA union, Michael Kaamekpor told 3News Saturday evening that they will meet with the Chief of Staff on Monday on the issue.
According to him, their action was not strike as was reported, saying, “We never had a strike, we only grounded domestic flights” to pressure government.
