President of the Government and Hospitals Association of Ghana (GHOPSA), Mr Agyemang Badu, has described their decision to strike as “a painful journey”, but said members of the association were left with no choice .

Members of the GHOSPA on Monday, September 5 declared an indefinite strike over demands for their market premiums. The association said their action was necessitated what it tagged as permanent breakdown in negotiations with government over its grade structure and placement in public health facilities.

President of the association Mr. Agyemang Badu explained on 3FM’s Sunrise morning show that though the strike is not a pleasant decision to take, they have been left with no other choice.

“It has not been a pleasant decision for us to take but we have had to think hard before arriving at this conclusion. There is inequity in the market premium awarded to some categories within the same public sector and for instance those of us in the mainstream government hospital have a 0.5 whereas our colleagues in the university hospitals are 1.14″ he said.

“We met a lot of committees who have given their recommendations saying it is unfair for members within the same profession to be given different market premiums

“This has traveled over six years so that is why we are embarking on this rather painful journey”.
