GMET Warns of Heavy Rains and Strong Winds in Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has issued a warning advising Ghanaians to prepare for heavy rains potentially continuing until the end of July.

This advisory comes after reports of flooding in parts of Accra following heavy rainfall on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of Central Analysis and Forecast at GMet, stated that areas, especially in the southern regions, can expect thunderstorms with strong winds, possibly causing damage to buildings, tree branches, and uprooting trees with weak roots. Ahafianyo emphasized that residents in the southern sector should be vigilant as moderate windy conditions, lightning, and thunderstorms are expected between now and the end of June/July.

“We should be expecting every day or every other day, we will be experiencing rains in the southern sector. For the northern sector, they are not preparing for their rain storm so once in a while they will get rain which is likely to be moderate or severe and will come with strong wind that is likely to bring destruction, ripping off roofing sheets and possibly taking down tree branches.

“For us at the southern sector, we should put our minds at rest that between now till the end of June/July, we will be getting some rains and most times, it’ll be accompanied by moderate windy conditions with lightning and thunderstorms,” she said in an interview with Citinews.
