The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) had to call off activities for today’s congress in Accra following a court injunction served on the Committee and its executives.
The last minute decision was announced at the congress venue when the Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and some delegates were all seated for the day’s activities, 3news.com gathered.
On the agenda of the highest decision making body of the GOC for today included the Report of the President of the GOC; Report of Auditors; Consideration of Audited Reports (2015), the Discharge of Executive Board; Appointment of Auditor for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, among others.
But the congress was forced to end abruptly after the Ghana Weightlifting Federation successively served an injunction notice on GOC executives.
The Federation claimed the Saturday’s congress was illegal.
In a writ filed on Friday July 22, 2016 at the Accra High Court, the Federation sought “A declaration that by the resolution of the Congress of the 1st Defendant dated 2nd November 2013, signed by the 2nd and 3rd Defendants herein, which extended the mandate of the Executive Board of the 1st Defendant until the General Assembly immediately after the next Olympiad in 2016 the Defendants are bound to hold congress only after the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.”
3news.com is informed that the Ghana Olympic Committee has indicated its intention to face off with the Federation in court possibly on Thursday.
Present at the suspended congress included Professor Francis Dodoo, President of GOC; Richard Akpokavie, GOC General Secretary; Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Minister of Youth and Sports; Joe Kpenge, National Sports Authority boss and some affiliates of GOC.
