Hydeia Broadbent, H.I.V. Advocate, Passes Away at 39

Hydeia Broadbent, a leading advocate born with H.I.V., passed away at 39 in Las Vegas.

Her father, Loren Broadbent, verified her death without disclosing the cause. Ms. Broadbent started sharing her battle with H.I.V. on television at the age of 6, seeking to educate the public during an epidemic that fueled panic and stigma surrounding AIDS, as stated on her website. Her impactful journey began at age 6 when she shared her struggle on TV during the AIDS epidemic.
In 1992, at 7, she spoke with Magic Johnson, emphasizing H.I.V. awareness. Despite health challenges, she shared her story nationally and appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” at 11.

Born on June 14, 1984, Hydeia was adopted by Loren and Patricia Broadbent. Diagnosed with H.I.V. at 3, she faced learning challenges, starting school in the seventh grade. Her mother prioritized health over formal education.

Into adulthood, Hydeia advocated against AIDS stigma, earning recognition, including Ebony magazine’s “Most Influential 150 African Americans” in 2008 and 2011. She dedicated her life to public education and prevention, expressing her commitment on CNN in 2012.
