Scores of women in Accra have questioned the conscience of the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, as they thronged the streets of Accra Tuesday to express their disapproval over his recent attacks on Ghanaian women.
The women, drawn from various women groups in Accra, want Parliament to call the vociferous MP to order or face their wrath, TV3’s Nina Ewurabena Antwi Kusi reports.
Mr Agyepong has widely been criticised for debasing womanhood with his utterances. The MP recently suggested the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms Charlotte Osei, secured her job through sex.
He reportedly made a statement at a party rally in Kumasi which seemed to suggest that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms Charlotte Osei, got her job by offering sexual favours”.
Reports say Mr Agyapong claimed some highly placed officials in the government told Mrs Osei to “bring your buttocks in exchange of EC Chair position”; a statement that has since been condemned by many.
Our correspondent reports that the women are scheduled to present a petition to Parliament at the end of their procession which started from the Accra Sports Stadium through the Ministries area to the Tema Station.
“They said they’ll give Parliament time to act on their petition but if nothing is done, they’ll take the next step,” Nina reports.
The women, she reports, want the MP to show respect to women in the country.
They carried placards bearing: “Kennedy Must Apologise; Kennedy you did not try at all; Power to women; You are grown, act like it; Kennedy Agyapong you were born by a woman; Without us there is no you.”
