The EC is exhibiting Ghana’s voter’s register for people to check and verify their details and fingerprints biometically

The Electoral Commission has announced more than one million people on Ghana’s current voter’s register have been verified biometrically, just three days into the on-going voter’s exhibition exercise.

It said in a statement issued Thursday that a total of 1,003,812 people have so far been verified biometrically from the 29, 000 exhibition centres across the country.

The voter’s register exhibition exercise started on July 18 and is expected to end on Sunday, August 7.

Communications Director at the Commission, Mr Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, this result was collated using a connected centralized data system from the regions to the EC’s headquarters.

He told Onua FM although the turnout has been better compared with previous years,  it is still not encouraging.

“I wish that more people would have checked their biometric details by now. Though it happens to have been better than previous years, there is still more room for improvement, that is why we want people to know the progress so far to partake in the exercise,” he said

There have so far been reports of swapping of names, pictures, wrong addresses, wrong coding as well as some basic errors in the personal data of eligible voters such as age and sex among others.

Responding to that, Mr  Dzakpasu describing the situation as disturbing, he said such problems have occurred in the past, adding that is the more reason why the Commission is encouraging people to go and check their names.

“Checking ones details biometrically really help. The exhibition period is the time for more people to engage with the Commission to help make the necessary changes. This helps all of us to have a credible register,” Mr Dzakpasu told Onua FM

The Commission believes that it has deployed the necessary logistics and personnel across the regions to enhance the exercise.

“The Commission is therefore encouraging all eligible voters, to go out in their numbers to help in the exhibition exercise to end challenges associated with the voters register,” it said in a statement.
