Ghana music industry value ‘minus zero’, quack pundits are major reason – JMJ

0

Star music executive and producer JMJ has intensely bemoaned the trend of ill-informed individuals being hosted on TV and on radio as entertainment pundits.

Intimating this is sorely unprofessional, he added it has consequently eaten away the value of show-business in Ghana.

The producer for serial hitmakers like Kaakie and Samini, JMJ said “sometimes, I feel shy telling my close mates that I’m actually part of this industry”.

He spoke on the national broadcaster’s GTV on ‘Record Label Contracts: What A Musician Must Know’.

JMJ noted that “when there is a health issue, they bring health professionals

“When there is an agric conversation, they bring farmers [and] people who are well-versed in the matter.

Surprisingly, however, he noted, it is not same in showbiz when personnel are outlined for industry conversations.

“…sometimes when you hear some people talking on TV, and they talking on behalf of all of us, it is saddening.

“You ask: ‘What is the reason you are qualified to be on this set?’,” he quizzed.

JMJ recalled “back then” at media establishments such as “GBC here,” programme producers knew “it was a risk to put a layman on” to mislead the public.

He asked his audience to imagine, “they brought a fake doctor here and he starts giving wrong prescription and then the innocent person at home just swallows it”.

“Entities like GBC know the danger so they’ll make sure they go for people who are well-versed in the conversation,” the JR Music founder stressed.

Conversely, in the entertainment industry, “we are the only people that you’d hear [introduce someone for a conversation as]: ‘He’s a pundit, he’s this, he’s a music critic,” etc. Meanwhile, he intimated, the individual has no education or relevant industry experience for the topic.

“And that’s how we grew our industry. That’s why its value is minus zero today,” he concluded.

Sachet water truck driver arrested for using boss’ sales money for sport betting

0

The 26-year-old driver of a sachet water delivery vehicle was taken into custody and appeared in court after he bet on sports with sales proceeds from his business.

Meyiwa, who began working as a driver in March and was in charge of distributing sachet water, is accused of using some of his daily sales revenue for gambling without telling his employer.

According to the prosecution, Meyiwa sold N88,000 worth of sachet water in October but neglected to give the money back, stating that his customers owed him.

This dishonest behaviour developed into a pattern. Meyiwa committed the same crime again in November, driving off with bags of N300,000 worth of sachet water.

Instead of fulfilling his delivery duties, he used the money to place bets. When the bets were unsuccessful, he disappeared

Meyiwa eluded searchers for a long time until he was spotted at another business. After being captured by the police, he was arraigned before Magistrate A.O. Salawu.

Meyiwa committed the crime at Okusanya Street, off Adebayo Road, in Bariga between March and November 2023, the prosecutor, Oriabure, told the court.

Section 287 (7) of the Lagos State of Nigeria 2015 Criminal Law pertains to the theft charge that was brought against him.

A few days ago, a 31-year-old man named Chukwuma Onoh tragically took his own life after reportedly losing N2.5 million in an online bet in Abia State, Nigeria’s southeast.

Desperate to clear a debt of N1.2 million, which he borrowed from friends to supplement his N1.3 million bet, Onoh reached out to a man presumed to be his boss via WhatsApp earlier that day.

In a heartfelt message, Onoh expressed the dire situation he found himself in, stating, “The only option is to end my life as I cannot live with the shame. I have turned into a gambler because of no job, and right now, I am at a point if I don’t redeem my debt, I might kill myself to pay the debt

Onoh disclosed the full extent of his financial difficulties in a later message, writing, “I used N2,500,000 to place a bet and N1.2 m is not my own and if I don’t pay up today.” By the time you read this, I will have passed away. I want to buy a sniper where I am right now, as I type this message.

The alleged boss responded to his request for financial support by saying he couldn’t assist right away. He suggested that Onoh ask his creditors to be patient with him instead so that he could pay off the debt in installments.

Less than two hours after making this post, Onoh ingested a toxic substance, presumably Sniper, and was rushed to Madonna Hospital Umuahia by friends. Despite efforts by doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he was declared dead

You’re joking! – Mr. Logic blasts Tourism Ministry over ‘Play Ghana’ Initiative

0

Entertainment pundit cum musician, Mr. Logic, has bashed the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture over the ‘Play Ghana’ initiative, which seeks to ensure that Ghanaian songs are played regularly in the country.

According to him, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, which has entertainment personality Mark Okraku-Mantey as its deputy, lacks understanding about how to promote local music in the country with regards to how they handled the ‘Play Ghana’ initiative.

He pointed out that the main challenge with Ghanaian songs not thriving enough is the fact that the music produced by some of the artistes is not of a higher standard that would interest people to listen.

Speaking on the United Showbiz programme monitored by GhanaWeb, Mr. Logic called on the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture to engage the right institutions and stakeholders if they want to make strides with the ‘Play Ghana’ initiative.

He described the current approach by the ministry as a ‘joke.’

“We have lost what makes a song in Ghana. The ministry (Tourism, Arts and Culture) does not understand this work. I would plead with them that if they want to do anything with music they should look for the right institutions and artistes. The musicians who were present were advocating and that could be done by anybody. I said that it is not 80/20. Good music will always penetrate the system because people are surfing whether from Nigeria, South Africa or Jamaica.

“The problem is there are too many bad songs in the system but the consumers will never agree with you. What is 80/20? It is a big joke. I respect the artistes who went to speak at the event but the agenda is emotional. It seems the music industry is dead so the dance challenge on social media is what the youth are using to revive the music,” he said.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture together with the Information Ministry launched ‘Play Ghana’ initiative to ensure that local songs are played most of the time by the media.

It was said that there was a plan of 80/20 where Ghanaian songs would be played more often than foreign ones.

The initiative has been met with mixed reactions by some musicians and netizens on social media.

Stay away from tramadol, glue and eat healthy – Black Prophet to the youth

0

Ghanaian artiste, Black Prophet, has admonished the youth to make their health a priority and stay away from anything that could be injurious to them.

He advised the youth to stay away from drugs, especially tramadol, and the sniffing of glue that has become prevalent in society, adding that it has negative implications for the health of individuals.

Black Prophet called on the leaders of the nation to put in place good measures that will help alleviate the plights of the youth so they do not go astray from societal norms.

Speaking in an interview with Abeiku Santana on the Atuu programme aired by UTV and monitored by GhanaWeb, Black Prophet urged the youth to desist from indulging themselves in drugs and other uncouth acts that could jeopardize their health.

When Abeiku Santana asked Black Prophet to share some messages with his fans, he retorted, “I would say peace and love to all m fans out there. Stay positive; stay away from tramadol, glue, and all those who do drugs in town. Eat healthy, be careful of what comes out of your mouth and what goes inside as well and stay positive. The leaders must also stay awake and don’t let the youth fall astray. More life and strength to everybody out there.”

Our music industry is not in a good place – R2Bees’ Manager laments

0

Manager for R2Bees, Ike Otoo Arhin, has added his voice to the ongoing discussions surrounding the recent “Play Ghana” initiative championed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Addressing these issues on the New Day show on TV3, Ike Otoo Arhin acknowledged the decline of the Ghana music industry in the global space.

He said, the introduction of technology in the form of streaming platforms was supposed to be beneficial but ended up giving users the freedom to consume foreign music; a situation that has led to the decline of Ghanaian music.

“Let us understand that our music is not in a good place, so everybody, including ordinary people and not stakeholders, needs to understand that. If you go to other countries, you come back with an appreciation for our music.

“As the world develops, technology brought a saviour to African music in the form of streaming, so it means that we are spoiled for choice, but as we use these platforms, there is a lot of foreign influence. So our music has to be in a position whereby it can sink in,” he said.

Ike Otoo Arhin further argued that Ghanaian songs are good enough to compete in the global space but stated that these songs need the right investment to ensure that happens.

“But that is difficult because the money is not there to push these songs. That is why we need to consciously pick up these songs. The songs are good but we are constantly spoiled for choice. That’s why we need to consciously promote these songs.

“Suppose the music is doing well. It feeds everyone, including painters, and carpenters. We are complaining that there are no jobs, but If we push our music we will create jobs for thousands,” he said.

Recently, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture launched a “Play Ghana” initiative aimed at encouraging more Ghanaian songs played on radio, bars, and events.

It’s a shame to say my music is appreciated better outside Ghana – Wiyaala

0

Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Noella Wiyaala Nwadei better known by her stage name Wiyaala, has said that she is very popular in Ghana and does not pay heed to those who think otherwise. She described the people who had contributed to this assertion as shallow-minded and shortsighted.

The “Leno” hitmaker, in a recent interview with RazaSwaggy on “Rush Hour” in Cape Coast, revealed that she performs a lot in Ghana. This was in response to a question posed by the host whether she performed more outside Ghana than in Ghana.

She further disclosed that a lot of her Ghanaian performances are corporate events and she does not see the need to post everything on social media.

Wiyaala, who describes her genre of music as folk, traditional, and African, acknowledges that not everyone appreciates her style of music, and stated that shouldn’t be a basis for people to be biased and discredit her work.

She believes in her craft and knows her opinions are valid and important in the public eye. She further stated that it is a dent in the Ghanaian music industry and Ghanaians as a whole if people think her music is appreciated better by foreigners.

“If people are saying white people appreciate my music more than my own people, that means there’s something wrong with my own people,” she said.

On a lighter note, the singer mentioned her physique as one of the things that make her popular aside from her unique talent. She further touted her popularity saying; “I know I am popular in Ghana. If I was not popular, you would not be interviewing me right now.”

Wiyaala registered her presence on the Ghanaian music scene in 2009 with her first album, “Tumu.”

She has since then chalked major success in her career, performed on several international stages, and won several local and international awards. She headlined the 15th London African Music Festival in 2017 and has been a member of the Grammy Recording Academy since July 2022.
