BET HipHop award-winning artiste Black Sherif’s recently released song, titled ‘OH NO’ is currently the number most Shazam song in Ghana.

Released on November 9, 2023, the song has quickly become the most Shazam’d song in Ghana, and is also currently number one on the Apple Music Top 100 Ghana chart.

The groundbreaking artiste is dominating the ever-growing African music scene with his new single, ‘OH NO’ which is barely a week old and already topping charts and enjoying massive radio spins.

Produced by Black Sherif’s in-house producer Samsney and Joker Nharnah, ‘OH NO’ is a Highlife, Soul, and Drill-infused anthem that chronicles the rapper’s resilience in navigating through adversity while staying true to his art.

In the song’s chorus, Black Sherif reaffirms his decision to keep working hard and staying true to himself, despite the challenges he may face. “I’m not switching up / I’m not giving up / I’m not giving in,” he sings.

Detailing the inspiration behind ‘OH NO’, the singer reiterated, “It feels like me standing at the edge of an open-pit but I know the resultant effect of the very next step at that moment in time.

I chose to live my life devoid of any fear of falling into the pit. There are voices around and within; pushing me. Either to direct my next step away from the pit or have me fall into this deep abyss.

“Oh No”, is a reaffirmation of my destiny and my calling. It’s me defining who I am, what I have believed in, and basking in the work I have put in thus far”.

Black Sherif began the year with the release of a double single project dubbed, ‘Take Care of Yourself Blacko’– a dulcet self-care affirmation song that preaches healing and taking time to reflect on his journey.

Since last year’s release of his debut album, The Villain I Never Was, Black Sherif has solidified his place as one of Africa’s most powerful creative voices and amassed massive global streaming numbers, which made him the most streamed Ghanaian artist of 2022 on Spotify and the most streamed Ghanaian artist of all time on popular African streaming platform Boomplay. Trolling Stonebwoy over Grammys snub is out of ignorance and jealousy – Rex Omar

0

Veteran highlife musician Rex Owusu Marfo well-known as Rex Omar has expressed his concern about those trolling Stonebwoy for not getting a nomination at the Grammy Awards.

According to him, no matter how hard Stonebwoy is working and because he wasn’t nominated for the Grammys, Ghanaians have not right to troll him.

Speaking in an interview with Amansan Krakye on Property FM in Cape Coast, Rex Omar said it’s ignorance and jealousy that’s making some people troll Stonebwoy.

“That’s what this country is and when these things happen as a human, we make the artiste become so discouraged and disappointed.

“If for nothing at all Stonebwoy has performed on a lot of international platforms and at the end of the day we will say Stonebwoy is the Ghanaian artiste.

“That is what people must understand that when the artiste becomes popular globally they are marketing the country,” he remarked

“So if you’re a Ghanaian and because of ignorance and jealousy you decide to troll Stonebwoy, then who are you trolling? You’re trolling yourself and the country”, he added

How Fancy Gadam responded to the 17 attendees of his concert

0

Ghanaian musician, Mujahid Ahmed Bello popularly known as Fancy Gadam has recounted the struggles he went through at the initial stages of his music career.

According to his narration, it took him four years to come up with his first album in 2010 when he gained recognition in the Northern regional capital, Tamale as a musician.

The artist disclosed that he experienced heartbreak after his inaugural concert in the Upper West Region, specifically in Wa, where only seventeen (17) attendees were present. Undeterred by the low turnout, he persevered, delivering a performance that showcased his potential, with the hope that those in attendance would spread the word to others.

“My first show in the Upper West was a flop show,” he said. “Because I was thinking I’m very big in the North. I’m very big in Tamale, so I can venture to these places. Not knowing when you are big in someplace, doesn’t mean you are big everywhere.”

He continued: “So my first show in Upper West, that is in Wa, I had about 17 people who showed up but I performed,” Fancy Gadam made these remarks in an interview with JoyPrime TV.

When Fancy Gadam was quizzed on how he felt after 17 people showed up at his concert in Wa, he responded, “You know how it feels? Heartbreaking. But I told my team to put it in their minds that the place is filled to the capacity. We should make sure we deliver well to the people who came to the event.

“And then we did. We did our best to perform very well for the 17 people. And then the following year, the 17 people started spreading my name in Upper West and that’s how I became popular.

“They told me, they’ve been saying, ‘That guy is a good performer because I’m a dancer as well.’ So even if you don’t understand what I’m saying, maybe on stage you would feel the energy.”

Fancy Gadam is one of the renowned musicians in Ghana whose song titled ‘Total Cheat’ won the Most Popular Song of the Year in 2018 at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

I have 45 awards, you can’t pressure me – Efya jabs critics

0

Popular Ghanaian songstress, Efya Nokturnal has stated that she doesn’t get pressured to gain international recognition like other artistes.

Speaking to Berla Mundi on New Day on TV3 on November 14, Efya believed that her attaining international recognition is only a matter of time, thus she is not in a hurry to release any projects to speed up the process.

“There’s no pressure for me; it’s just a process. I believe I will get there; it’s just the timing. Everybody’s timing is different, so I don’t have to rush myself to go and do something just to add something up. I do not rush it; everything I do is already intended and planned. I am not rushing to do things,” she said.

When asked about how she would respond to fans who ask why she has yet to attain any international awards despite her long-standing in the music industry, Efya expressed her indifference.

She said: “I have won about 45 awards in my career, I am not thinking about what they are thinking… It’s for me first.”

She further called for an end to “unnecessary comparisons” between artistes, stating that the Ghana music industry does not have access to the funding that artistes in other spaces, notably Nigeria have access to.

“We come from a place where the industry is not as big as in other places. So please stop comparing. We don’t have the financial assistance as most of these artistes do to be signed to international labels to be able to get access to some of the things that these people are getting access to,” she said.

Efya’s comments come on the back of the ongoing debate over the state of the Ghana music industry and the performance of artistes. The debate recently reignited with the release of the 2024 Grammy nominations list which was devoid of any Ghanaian artistes.

Many stakeholders have called for an end to the pressures placed on Ghanaian artistes. While fans on social media have accused artistes of being lazy with their craft.

You have no authority to compel anyone to appear on your programmes – NMC to Oyerepa FM’s Aunty Naa

0

The National Media Commission (NMC) has therefore directed Kumasi-based media house Oyerepa FM/TV to desist from compelling people to appear on their social issues programme, Oyerepa Afutuo,  host by Aunty Naa, which is aired on radio and television.

According to a report by Graphic.com.gh, the decision comes in response to a complaint filed by Daniel Gyapanin, head of the Denkyira Agona Kwadwom Abusua of Jukwa family in the Central Region, against Oyerepa FM/TV.

The controversy arose from an episode of the social issues program, Oyerepa Afutuo, aired on April 25, 2023. During this episode, guests, hosts, and panel members made unguided and derogatory comments about Daniel Gyapanin in relation to a case involving a missing dead body at the mortuary.

In a settlement committee meeting, the NMC found that Oyerepa had erred by allowing participants to assume the role of judges in a family matter. The NMC directed the media house to refrain from compelling individuals to appear on their program without obtaining consent from all involved parties. If a party is unwilling to participate, the program should be halted immediately.

While acknowledging the program’s entertainment value and its role in issue resolution, the NMC emphasized the importance of providing fair hearing to all parties. The commission highlighted that parties are not legally obligated to submit to the host and urged the station to avoid intimidation, threats, or disregarding due process when participants decline involvement.

NMC DETERMINES COMPLAINT BY DANIEL GYAPANIN, HEAD OF FAMILY, DENKYIRA AGONA KWADWOM ABUSUA OF JUKWA AGAINST OYEREPA TV/FM

The National Media Commission has directed that Oyerepa TV/FM Stations has no authority to compel any person to appear on any of their programmes whether live or recorded.

At a settlement committee meeting on a complaint lodged by Daniel Gyapanin, head of the Denkyira Agona Kwadwom Abusua of Jukwa Family in the Central Region against Oyerepa FM/TV, the Commission noted that the station erred when discussants on the programme turned themselves into panel of Judges to pronounce on a family matter.

The Commission further said that the radio/Television stations must seek the consent of all parties involved in an issue before a programme can be broadcast, stressing that if a party is not willing and therefore absent the programme should be stopped.

The Commission emphasized that is incumbent on every director of programme to immediately stop the programme, if the other party does not want to make comments or be part of the discussion.

At a settlement meeting on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, it emerged that Oyerepa FM has a social issues programme which discusses very pertinent concerns of people in Kumasi and its environs. It was during one of the discussions on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 that the guest, host and panel members made unguided, uncultured and derogatory comments against the Denkyira Agona Kwadwom Abusua of Jukwa in a case involving a missing dead body at the mortuary.

The Commission noted that by giving fair hearing to all parties over issues in a programme, the radio/TV Stations will be following the basic rules and standards in the discharge of their duties.

The Commission noted that although the programme has helped in resolving a number of issues there is no law binding parties to submit to the host of the programme.

It was further noted beyond the entertainment value of the programme, it could be useful for one as long as the parties willingly yield in responding to invitations. Therefore, where any party declines to participate in the programme, the station should not resort to intimidation, threats and disregard for the rule of law and due process in passing comments or drawing conclusions and judgement.

NMC issues final warning to Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart

0

The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a final warning to Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart over an inciteful broadcast.

In a press statement dated Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the NMC said that Captain Smart had directly insulted the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as “beasts” during a recent broadcast.

The NMC further stated that Captain Smart had claimed that these officers embezzled monies meant for soldiers on peacekeeping operations, but had offered no evidence to support his claims.

The NMC described the broadcast as “dangerous” and “unprofessional.” It also noted that it had warned Onua Radio/TV about promoting violence against the state in December 2022, but that the station had not taken steps to address the issue.

The NMC gave Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart until November 19, 2023, to:

– Withdraw the insults and apologize to the CDS and his commanders
– Apologize to the Ghanaian public for the use of vulgar language
– Put in measures to stop the dangerous behaviour of the station and improve the station’s capacity for regulatory compliance

Below is the full statement

FINAL CAUTION AGAINST INCITEFUL BROADCAST

Last week, your station carried an inciteful broadcast in which Captain Smart directly insulted the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as “beasts.” He claimed the officers embezzle monies meant for soldiers on peacekeeping operations but offered no evidence to back his claims.

This was as dangerous as it was unprofessional.

You may recall that on December 8, 2022, we drew your attention to the use of your station to promote violence against the state and your management’s lack of capacity to address same. This was after we had written to your management on December 2, 2022.

It is of concern to us that the behaviour persists after we drew the board’s attention. We are now compelled to come to the board again as a way of giving the company a last opportunity for internal gatekeeping.

We ask that you put in measures to stop the dangerous behaviour of the station and improve the station’s capacity for regulatory compliance. We also ask the station to withdraw the insults and apologise to the CDS and his commanders. We further ask the station to apologise to the Ghanaian public for the use of vulgar language.

We expect you to undertake the above and present evidence of same to us before November 19, 2023 after which date you may hear further from the Commission.

Yours faithfully

Piesie Esther announces ‘Made by Grace’ concert II on Dec 3

0

After blowing the minds of Ghanaians with two major concerts in Accra and Kumasi with her ‘Made By Grace’ concert last year, reigning Gospel Artiste of the Year, Piesie Esther has announced this year’s edition of Made By Grace concert scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 3, at the UPSA auditorium.

This year’s event is sponsored by Flora.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s event at the Marriott Hotel in Accra recently, Piesie Esther said Ghanaians should embrace themselves for the upcoming show as other artistes who are not on the bill will pull a surprise on stage.

Piesie Esther explained a lot of gospel artistes reached out to her to be part of this year’s event but had to shelve the idea for want of time.

“With the selection of artistes, my management team and I prayed about the selection of the artistes. We didn’t just wake up and choose the artistes you see on bill today. I personally love this year’s selection of artistes because I know they will deliver,” she said.

The launch was graced by Patience Nyarko, Kofi Peprah, Perez Musik, Prophet Joseph Atarah and people from industry players.

Piesie Esther was supported at the maiden edition of the ‘Made By Grace Concert’ in Accra and Kumasi by artistes such as Obaapa Christy, Tagoe Sisters, Celestine Donkor, Moses OK, ASP Kofi Sarong, Ernest Opoku and Jack Alolome.

It’s been over two decades since a black woman won Grammy Album of the Year; will SZA change that?

0

The artiste with the most Grammy nominations this year, nine, is a Black woman, SZA. Here’s why that is significant.

Back in 2017, there was a lot of discussion about the Recording Academy and race after Adele topped Beyoncé and three other nominees to win the prestigious album of the year Grammy.

Beyoncé had been widely considered the favourite for her album, “Lemonade.” Even Adele thought Bey should have won, and said so, tearfully, in her acceptance speech.

“The artiste of my life is Beyoncé, and this album to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, was just so monumental,” Adele said.

The Bey Hive, Beyoncé’s hardcore fan base, agreed. Former Recording Academy President Neil Portnow addressed uproar at the time that racism was behind Adele winning.

“No, I don’t think there’s a race problem at all,” Portnow said in an interview with Pitchfork.

Try telling that to Black people.

Race conversations

The 2024 Grammy nominees for album of the year are sure to stir the conversation about race once again. While #GrammysSoWhite may not have caught fire the way #OscarsSoWhite did, there is still the perception that Black artistes, especially women, have a tougher time securing Grammy wins.

Which is why all eyes will be on the album of the year category in February given that three Black artistes are nominated, SZA, Janelle Monáe and Jon Batiste. It would be quite the feat if Batiste wins as he took home the album of the year Grammy in 2022 for “We Are,” making him the first Black artiste to win since Herbie Hancock in 2008 for “River: The Joni Letters,”

If SZA wins, she will become the first Black woman to triumph in the category since Lauryn Hill in 1999 for “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Monáe would become the first Black and nonbinary artist ever to win the category. In the 66 years of Grammy ceremonies, Black performers have only won the event’s top prize 11 times.

In addition to Batiste, Hancock and Hill, Stevie Wonder won album of the year in 1974, 1975 and 1977; Michael Jaackson won in 1984; Lionel Richie in 1985; Quincy Jones in 1991; Natalie Cole in 1992; Whitney Houston in 1994; Outkast in 2004; and Ray Charles in 2005. (Read also: Ghana’s Stonebwoy let off Grammys list, Davido, others make it big)

Neith SZA nor Monáe have shied away from their Blackness in their art or in interviews.

SZA, who has shared about sometimes being the only Black girl competing in gymnastics as a child, talked to Complex magazine in 2016 about the cultural influence of Black women.

“I feel good being a black woman; I’ve always felt good. But to be a black woman right now, it definitely feels like I have back up,” she said. “That’s a good feeling. I’ve never felt like that before.”

Monáe, too, stands strong in her identity.

In a 2020 interview with Harvard Business Review, Monáe said, “Early in my career I would show up at a photo shoot, and stylists would say, “Hey, you’re in this tuxedo, and you’re wearing your hair natural. It’s a bit avant-garde. How can we sell that? Perhaps you should look like this.”

“Or record label execs would say, ‘You’re this Black girl talking about science fiction and technology. It’s not marketable. How about you just get a more simple song and not have your work be so dense?,’” Monáe recalled. “Those conversations made me think, Okay, if I don’t find my voice, if I don’t speak up for myself, somebody else is going to do it.”

Both artistes have successfully found their voices. It remains to be seen if the Grammys voters will hear them.
