Dery petitions President Mahama to investigate Anas

0

Embattled high court judge Paul Uuter Dery has lodged a formal complaint with President John Dramani Mahama over what he has deemed an attempt by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to have him and other justices of the superior court removed from office.

According to him, Anas lacks identity and is virtually non-existent.

“Your Excellency, we have the instructions of our client to draw your attention to these serious identity problems of the petitioner for in our view, the identity of the petitioner is paramount to any petition for the removal of Justices of the Superior Court pursuant to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution,” the letter intercepted by www.tv3network.com said.

The 13-point letter dated Monday, February 8 asked President Mahama to “cause an investigation to be conducted into the true identity of the petitioner since from the evidence adduced herein, the petitioner Tiger Eye PI who purported to file a petition with your office is non-existent”.

The letter written on behalf of Justice Dery by his counsel Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo was copied to the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood.

Justice Dery is among 12 high court judges indicted in a petition filed by Anas after a landmark exposé on the judiciary. Two – namely John Ajet Nasam and Ernest Obimpeh – have already been dismissed.

Chicago police officer sues victim’s family over shooting

0

A white Chicago police officer who fatally shot a black teenager last December is suing his family for $10m (£6.9m), claiming emotional distress.

Robert Rialmo shot 19-year-old student Quintonio LeGrier six times, killing the boy’s neighbour in the process.

Mr Rialmo says Mr LeGrier swung at him with a baseball bat from close range, but Mr LeGrier’s lawyers say the two were at least 20ft (6m) apart.

The lawsuit comes amid a federal investigation into Chicago’s police.

The investigation is focusing on the use of force by officers and the department’s accountability procedures.

It was launched after weeks of protests over the police killing of a black teenager by a white officer.

Laquan McDonald, 17, was shot 16 times in 2014 by the officer, who was charged with murder over a year later.

The inquiry will take a similar form to those recently conducted in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri – as well as more than 20 other departments in recent years, and will look for systematic violations of US civil rights laws.

‘A new low’

Joel Brodsky, Mr Rialmo’s defence lawyer, said it was important in an atmosphere charged by police shootings to send a message that police are “not targets for assaults” and “suffer damage like anybody else”.

Mr LeGrier’s father, Antonio, filed a wrongful death lawsuit days after the shooting, saying his son was not armed with a weapon and was not a threat.

His lawyer, Basileios Foutris, said Mr Rialmo’s lawsuit was “a new low even for the Chicago Police Department”.

“First you shoot them, then you sue them,” he said.

The lawsuit provides the officer’s first public account of how he says the shooting happened.

Mr Rialmo, who was responding to a domestic disturbance call, says Mr LeGrier came charging at him down the stairs and swung a baseball bat at his head. Mr Rialmo says he backed away and shouted at Mr LeGrier to drop the bat, but drew his weapon and fired after the teenager swung the bat again.

Mr Rialmo fired six times, killing both Mr LeGrier and Bettie Jones, a neighbour who was standing behind the teenager.

“The fact that LeGrier’s actions had forced Officer Rialmo to end LeGrier’s life and to accidentally take the innocent life of Bettie Jones has caused, and will continue to cause, Officer Rialmo to suffer extreme emotional trauma,” the lawsuit says.

Lawyers for Mr LeGrier’s father and for Ms Jones say evidence indicates the officer was 20 or 30 feet (six to nine metres) away when he fired.

The LeGrier family’s lawyer also questions why the teen would attack the officer since he was the one who called police.

“If you’re calling multiple times for help are you going to charge a police officer and try to hit him with a bat? That’s ridiculous,” Mr Foutris said.

County prosecutors have asked the FBI to investigate the shooting. The Chicago Police Department has refused to comment.

Such a lawsuit by an officer is extraordinarily unusual, said Phil Turner, a former federal prosecutor and current defence attorney who is not connected to the case.

Speaking to the Associated Press news agency, he questioned whether a judge would give it any merit and said it appeared intended to intimidate Mr LeGrier’s family.

He said he had never heard of an officer blaming his shooting victim for causing trauma.

Ghanaian Christians & Muslims must continue to co-exist peacefully – Bawumia

0

Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has cautioned Ghanaian Muslims to be on guard against extremists and their influence and appealed to the Muslim Community to shun all divisions and continue to coexist peacefully with the majority Christian population as it is the only way to guarantee the stability of the Nation.

These comments were contained in a lecture titled “Islam In The 21st Century: The Role of Muslim Youth in Combating Extremism and Radicalism for Political Stability” delivered at the 9th Annual Congress of the Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA) of the University of Development Studies (UDS) last Friday.

“As young people we ought to guard against the evils of exclusivism. It is important that we realise that if Allah so desired He would have made all of us one people. But as He states in the Qur’an, He allows us to wallow in our differences, which He shall settle on the Day of Judgment.

“There shall be no compulsion in religion” so states the Qur’an. Let us therefore respect one another’s views on matters of religion. Intolerance in matters of religion is what breeds extremism and radicalism, which triggers political instability,” he said.

Touching on the relationship between faiths, Alhaji Dr. Bawumia explained that radicalism and extremism are the products of exclusivism and intolerance.

“In Ghana especially, the majority of the people live by the Christian faith. There cannot be peace and stability in Ghana except us, as Muslims co-exist peacefully with our Christian brothers and sisters. What feeds extremism and radicalism is the idea that there is only one way to God. While we are entitled to believe in the rightness of our way, we cannot seek to annihilate views that are opposite to ours. Radicalism and extremism are the product of exclusivism and intolerance.”

The former Deputy Central Bank Governor, delivering what was subsequently described as a well-researched scholarly Islamic piece by other speakers, explained that Islam itself is very tolerant of Christianity and pointed to various examples in the Qu’ran to make this point.

“Islam itself is very tolerant of Christianity. The first wave of Muslim migration to escape the persecution of the Makkans who opposed the nascent religion of Islam, was to Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia). At that time the Prophet advised his followers to migrate to Abyssinia because “a Christian King rules.” Indeed the Qur’an affirms the Islamic affinity to Christianity when it states that “you will find nearest to the believers those who say ‘we are Christians…because amongst them are men who are devoted to learning and monks and because they are not arrogant” (Q: 5:82). The Prophet is also reported to have stated that “both in this world and in the hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary…” (Bukhari: Vol 4: 434),” he stated.

Continuing, Alhaji Dr. Bawumia mentioned the recognition given to Jesus and Mary in the Qu’ran.

“When the Makkans sent a delegation to appeal to the Negus of Abyssinia to extradite the Muslims and when the Muslims were called upon to say why they should not be extradited, their Spokesperson, Jafar bin Abu Talib, quoted copiously from the 19th chapter of the Qur’an as his defense. The 19th chapter of the Qur’an is called the chapter of Mary (Suratul Maryam). Indeed Mary is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an and the chapter acknowledges the prophet-hood of Jesus, his special relationship with God, including the fact that he spoke from his cradle in defense of his mother when sections of her people thought that she had engaged in adultery; an incident that is not even mentioned in the Bible. The Prophet himself was to marry a Coptic Christian by name Maria and Allah subsequently made marriage between a Muslim man and a Christian woman lawful,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia urged Ghanaian Muslims to follow the good example of the National Chief Imam and to continue to work to sustain the peace and co-existence between the two faiths.

“In Ghana, unlike our neighbours in Nigeria, we have largely lived at peace with our Christian brothers and sisters. We have a National Chief Imam who even opened the doors of our Central Mosque in Accra to Christians to renovate for us as a symbol of the co-existence that ought to be between us. The youth should emulate this example by the National Chief Imam who is an embodiment of both Qur’anic and Prophetic wisdom.”

Producers fume as they reject KNUST’s ‘millipedes palm oil’ survey

0

Palm Oil Producers Association of Ghana has discounted a survey conducted by some postgraduate students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in four major markets which sought to suggest that some traders soak millipedes in palm oil to change its colour and taste.

The Association is therefore challenging the students to come out with evidence, describing the report as propaganda.

The shocking revelation comes nearly two months after the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), said it was safe to consume palm oil, following the arrest of some producers who were mixing the product with Sudan IV, a cancer-causing agent.

Speaking on Yensempa on Onua 95.1 FM today, the President of the Association, Maxwell Nii Konney said “we shall give the issue to the National

Security to investigate because we believe there is no iota of truth in the publication”.

He said “the palm oil industry feeds about two million people so the KNUST should come out clear on the findings in order not to throw dust into the eyes of the people”.

Mr. Konney urged the media to do a lot of investigations before they come out with anything, especially when it comes to health.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, Mr. Odame Darkwa when contacted said they have heard the news but they are yet to establish the source of the investigations.

The case was then adjourned to February 12.

But following the issuance of the warrant for his arrest, calls were placed to him and by 10:00AM, the musician arrived at the court in an apparent attempt to get the warrant withdrawn by the court.

Spelling Bee finalists urged to avoid fear

0

The 2015 champion of the National Spelling Bee Competition, Vishal Mukesh Thakwani, has advised contestants in this year’s competition not to be anxious, ahead of the upcoming national finals.

According to the grade nine student of the Delhi Public School International (DPSI), participants should focus on practising more vocabularies rather than pay attention to the outcome of the grand finale, which comes off on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

Addressing 138 finalists selected across the country to battle for this year’s National Spelling Bee crown in Accra on Thursday, the national champion urged contestants not to despair if they fail to spell the right words.

Vishal, who pursued the Spelling Bee title for three years before he became champion, said participants should be very patient and ask relevant questions such as definition and origin of various words they are expected to spell.

Contestants were taken through various vocabulary tests and coaching at the Christ the King Hall ahead of the 9th edition of the Spelling Bee event.

Presenting some tips on the competition, he said participants should not feel too disappointed when they fail to spell the right words, adding that instead they should put in more efforts towards constant practice which would lead them to success.

“Don’t put in lots of expectation. Just learn and do your best and the best results will be achieved. Those going into the competition have to learn more and more words. And they should not have so much stress or think more about the competition,” he advised.

The defending champion who was ranked 50th in the World Spelling Bee Competition indicated that the Spelling Bee was a tough competition and that competitors had to keep learning more new words.

He also cited the need to improve on his own vocabulary while more resources must be provided for teaching and learning of the English Language.

“It’s really a good thing for me to be in the Spelling Bee. It’s the biggest competition happening in Ghana and Africa. We just have to learn more and more words,” he added.

Princess Maame Ama Mensah, a student of the Akropong School for the Blind, who was participating in the contest for the third time, said the competition contributed to her comprehension and usage of the English Language even without a dictionary.

She added that she did not feel marginalised, noting that the spelling contest had rather boosted her self-confidence.

Organisers said about 24 students are constantly making attempts each year to win the competition.

Striking nurses have betrayed us – GRNMA

0

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has described the strike by the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives as a betrayal.

GRNMA says it is negotiating with the authorities over the issue so the unpaid nurses should have been patient with their action.

Health service delivery at the major hospitals across the country, especially the rural areas, have been interrupted today February 3, 2016, as over 7,000 nurses belonging to the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives embark on an indefinite nationwide strike to demand unpaid salaries.

But President of the GRNMA, Kwaku Asante-Krobea told Onua FM’s Yensempa that “we were leading them to discuss their issue but did not end only for us to hear such thing so we feel they have betrayed us because we are fighting for them”.

He asserted, “they are saying they can fight for themselves so we shall not fight for them again”.
