Zanetor Rawlings given greenlight by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has ruled that Dr Zanetor Rawlings can contest the 2016 parliamentary elections as National Democratic Congress’ candidate for the Klottey Korle Constituency.

The ruling on Monday, July 18 was given by a 4-1 majority decision.

Dr Rawlings’ candidature was challenged by incumbent Member of Parliament Nii Armah Ashietey after he accused her of not being a registered voter before the November 21 primary of the NDC as per Article 94(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Supreme Court explained that eligibility of a candidate can be up for deliberation only after the Electoral Commission opens nominations for an election.

Therefore, since nominations have not been opened for the 2016 elections, the daughter of the former first couple, the Rawlingses, can contest only if she gets registered before then.
