Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Wednesday, August 24 began a three-hour per day demonstration against the sale of the country’s major power distributor.

The demonstration is scheduled to end on Friday.

It will begin at 8:00am and end at 11:00am each day.

Announcing the commencement of the industrial action, Michael Nyantakyi, the General Secretary of the Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU), said red flags will be hoisted at each office of the Company across the nation.

Government is in talks with the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) to offer concessions in ECG to interested firms.

So far, 40 companies including 18 Ghanaian-owned ones are said to have expressed interest.

But Mr Nyatankyi asked government to review the compact terms.

“The private sector participation as a condition-precedent and a trigger for entry into force of the compact should be modified,” he said on Tuesday.

At the Central Region office of ECG, Onua FM’s Kwame Karkraba reports that workers came out of their offices to demonstrate at the forecourt.

Enoch Paul Hayes, the PUWU Regional Secretary, appealed to Ghanaians to support the workers in the fight against privatization of the company.
