The Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) has advised the Electoral Commission to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s order to restore public confidence in them.
The Supreme Court ordered the Electoral Commission in the Abu Ramadan/Evans Nimako’s case to delete names of NHIS card registrants on the electoral roll.
Speaking on 3FM’S Sunrise program, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey reiterated the need for the EC to do everything possible to boost public confidence in their operations.
“…We think that the EC should now help build public confidence and the public should also get involved, citizens should get involved and we sought out what needs to be done; let seize the opportunity to hear more from the EC on what they are doing to strengthen the machinery for our election. We want to see confidence built in the EC, in the electoral process, in the register and citizens are ready to make sure that we have a credible and peaceful elections”.
He has also urged the EC to educate electorate prior to the exhibition exercise.
“The more the EC speaks and share and inform the public, the greater the chances that people become better informed on what lies ahead. The EC cannot do everything to boost confidence or trust in the electoral process, as citizens, registered voters and so on we also have to be part of it; the EC said it is going to post the provisional biometric voters register at various exhibition centres throughout the country so we are saying that this is a good thing the EC should tell us a little bit more especially education on the process and then citizens should pick it up,” he concludes.
