President John Mahama has commended the West African Examinations Council over the conduct of the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Over the past few years, examinations conducted by WAEC at the basic and second cycle levels have been rocked by malpractices.
After receiving consistent bashings from the public, and at a point from President Mahama, WAEC this year put in place stringent measures to forestall the trend.
Speaking at the 70th Anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day at the Aburi Girls Senior High school, the president said he was happy with the steps taken by WAEC to deal with the problem.
“I am pleased also to note that WAEC has risen to the occasion to deal with the shameful examination malpractices that have plagued examinations over the past several years.
“This year I am proud to note that our BECE examination has passed with no incident recorded”.
The president also indicated that his government intends making more investment in the education sector. He revealed government’s plan to start free boarding school policy this year.
“Government spends almost a third of the total national budget on the education sector alone. The government also introduced progressively free senior high school education program and started it with day students, this year in August we hope to launch a program to cover boarding students in deprived communities”.
