The district office of the Electoral Commission in Tamale has resumed the transfer of voters after it was forced to end the exercise as a result of gunshots from unknown source outside their office on Thursday.
According to the EC’s Metropolitan Director, Andani Issah, who spoke to TV3 in an interview Friday morning, they could not work without adequate security.
He said some students from the University for Development Studies in Nyanpkala were at the office to transfer their votes but were prevented to do so by a political party and it led to chaos and violence, leading to gunshots.
The Director said security personnel were called to restore law and order but they could not contain the situation and he was compelled to end the exercise on Thursday prematurely and closed his office.
Later on Friday, a joint-security personnel from police and the military are providing protection for the Commission and voters to ensure successful exercise.
The Northern Regional Public Officer of the police, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said the Northern Region Command had a distress call from the EC on Thursday and security personnel went there and the assailants fled on motor bikes.
He said the shells the police picked at the scene of the shooting indicated that sophisticated weapons were used by the assailants.
The PRO said no arrest was made and appealed to all stakeholders in the election to assist security agencies to ensure peaceful election.
